The story of the Soviet Union is an interesting and ironic one to say the least. Born in a revolution and a civil war, it was dissolved by the signing of a paper on Christmas Day in 1991. In the past six years, we have seen Soviet Militaria go from highly priced, to extremely reasonable. But as history has taught us, this will not last forever. In fact, several factors tell us that prices may soon be going up again. First, in Russia itself, so many Orders and Medals have left the country, that there is a shortage of certain items and so prices of some Orders and Medals are rising. Second, as the Russian economy has recovered, more Russian collectors have entered the market, causing competition for the already scarce items. Lastly, more effective enforcement of the already on the books ban on the export of Soviet Militaria has driven prices up.
In short, if you are looking for a fascinating hobby with the prospect for an appreciation in the value of your collection, now is the time to take a good look at what is available.
